Varnai, Elizabeth
Vista Court Books

Good Morning Loon, a beautifully illustrated book for young children about the wildlife a boy discovers as he paddles with his mother in the morning mist, hoping to see a loon. On the forest path to the lake, what is rustling in the leaves? Hiding on the forest floor? What is splish-splashing in the marsh grasses? Knock-knocking among the trees? Swimming toward them? Flying above? Will they see a loon? As they paddle, they discover answers and encounter surprises: a red squirrel; a wood frog; a pileated woodpecker pecking for ants; a family of mergansers; a beaver that slaps its tail in warning; a great blue heron poised to grab a fish; an osprey nest with chicks; a dragonfly that lands for a visit. But so far, no loon. Then they hear its call. Ah-oooo! In the distance, they see it dive underwater, hunting for fish, and they wait ... When will it come up, and where? Includes a Tell Me More section with descriptions about each creature the paddlers encounter, including a website where one can hear the calls of a loon. A Tell Me Even More section follows, with resources for further information. Winner of the 2014 National Outdoor Book Award, Children's category.
